The Anatomy of a Chapbook: A Lab

This hands-on lab explores the chapbook as a distinct editorial form within small press publishing. Participants examine how chapbooks are shaped through theme, cohesion, sequencing, and visual identity, while also considering how editors and presses evaluate manuscripts for selection and publication. The session combines brief instruction with a guided generative exercise, allowing attendees to map the conceptual arc of a chapbook using tone, structure, and organizing principles. Panelists then discuss editorial approaches to chapbook development, including common challenges, submission considerations, and the role chapbooks play in literary magazines, contests, and press catalogs.
