Blood Roots Podcast: Featured Ballads Announced
Our team met during the fall semester and discussed the best four ballads for this podcast program. The discussion included thoughts on creating an overall narrative arc for the podcast series, giving listeners an understanding of how ballads came to Appalachia and flourished there. We also considered dramatic elements native to the ballads, themes and casting, and previous adaptions. The winners are . . . .
We're thrilled to announce the selection of four iconic American ballads that will be featured in our upcoming Blood Roots podcast episodes. These timeless songs have been chosen for their historical significance, their impact on American folk music, and the fascinating stories behind them.
Our featured ballads will be:

Wreck of the Old '97 - This early 20th-century ballad commemorates a tragic railroad accident in Virginia. It represents a newer style of American balladry that captured contemporary events and transformed them into lasting folk traditions.
